BC High clinched a share of the Catholic Conference title Thursday with a 6-3 victory over Malden Catholic in Malden. The win was the 500th in the career of head coach Norm Walsh (left), one which spans 32 years.
A standout player at BC High and later at Harvard, Walsh returned to BC High where he coached the freshman baseball team in the spring of 1976 and the junior varsity squad from 1977-1979. He took over the varsity job in 1980 and has guided the Eagles to three Division 1 state titles (2001, 2008, 2009).
The Eagles took the lead for good in the fourth, tallying four runs in the inning. Rich Roach, Tommy Landry, Justin Silvestro and Chris Donovan all drove in runs for BC High and that proved to be enough for Tommy McDonald, who went 5 2/3 innings to get the win.
Walsh is the 12th coach in state history to reach 500 wins. The others are Emile Johnson (Leominster), Peter Ambrose (Cardinal Spellman), Frank Carey (North Reading), James Curtin (Burlington), Dan Dulchinos (Chicopee Comprehensive), William Pettingell (Newburyport HS), John N. Carroll (Natick), Peter Moscariello (Reading), Tom Suchanek (Greenfield), Bill Tompkins (Walpole) and Pete Wall (Norwood).
